Proper Care of Hot Tub Filters

Hot Tub Filters

Isn’t it so relaxing and comfortable to be soaking in a hot tub with the clear and clean water with the jets massaging various parts of your body?

It is one thing to enjoy the hot tub, cleaning it up is another issue. Hot tubs, unfortunately, are not self cleaning. A bit of effort has to be exerted to maintain its parts and appearance. Aside from protecting the hot tub itself from forces of nature such as rain, snow and sunlight, the hot tub’s water should also be sanitized and changed as well as its filter cleaned and replaced.

Hot tub filters are categorized into three types, each having their own benefits. The first type of hot tub filter is the diatomaceous earth filters. The diatomaceous earth filter is made of super fine mesh grids that are encrusted with diatomaceous earth. The diatomaceous earth serves as an adhesive that traps dirt particles in the tub water. These types of filters are non-polluting and organic. Another type of hot tub filters are the sand filters. Sand filters, like its name obviously implies, use sand and gravel as its filter medium. The last type of hot tub filters are the cartridge filter. Cartridge type filters are the most ordinary hot tub filter type. Cartridge filters are made with a fine mesh material. Since the mesh is pleated, it allows the large material to be inserted in a small container, therefore capturing more dirt and debris.

Among all its parts, the hot tub filters are the most hardworking, unacknowledged and abused one. Hot tub filters start their work as soon as the hot tub is started. The water in the hot tub is forced into the filter. As the water passes through, the filter strains and cleans it effectively removing any traces of hair, bacteria, dead skin, bugs, leaves, algae and other gunk and debris that often get into the hot tub water.

To make sure that your hot tub filters last a long time and will properly serve its purpose, proper care should be followed:

1. Rinsing the hot tub filter once a week using a high pressure hose is advised to rid it of debris.

2. Ensure that the filter is installed properly inside its compartment for effective total filtration of the water.

3. Never rely on hot tub filters alone to clean your hot tub water. Various hot tub chemicals or sanitizers should be added to kill bacteria and algae.

4. New filters should be installed once a year or immediately if: the filter color is brown, gray, or green; the hot tub is previously owned by another owner or if the filter starts to show signs of wear and tear.

5. Purchase two pieces of hot tub filters and use them alternately every week. This way you can minimize wear of the filters and make them last a long time.

6. Remember that a hot tub is not a bathtub. While soaking in the hot tub, avoid using soaps, shampoos, or any kinds of oils to avoid overworking the filters.
