How to Replace a Hot Tub Air Blower

Air blowers are an integral part of any hot tub as they deliver air through several injectors. They are intended to create bubbles in the spa water that massages and relaxes your muscles.
Replacing, or installing, an air blower is not a difficult task. A blower is actually a simple device whose most complicated component is the fan motor and it does not require highly specialized training or tools to install. It is also for this reason that in the event that it breaks down, it is better and more economical to simply replace it.
Owing to the inherent danger of working on electrical repairs, however, it may be prudent to leave the task to a professional. But if you are an accomplished DIYer with previous experiences on electrical repairs, the task may well be within your capability.
The first step is to disconnect the power supply of the spa at the service panel. As an extra precaution, it is also recommended that the spa be unplugged as well.
After locating the old air blower inside the equipment area, remove its air duct hose from the exhaust port. Locate the electrical cable connecting the blower with the spa control pack and unplug. If there is a grounding wire, disconnect it as well. You are now ready to remove the mounting bolts.
To install the new blower, follow the preceding steps in reverse. In case the reason for the breakdown of your old blower is the intrusion of water, which is actually the most common cause, you may want to make a few modifications in the new blower’s installation.
If there is enough room inside the spa casing, try to install the blower as high as possible. Pointing the exhaust opening downward can also help. Another method is through the use of a Hartford loop and a one-way check valve. This consists of a loop in the air hose or pipe from the blower that is above the waterline. Relying on the principle that water seeks its own level under normal pressure the loop should prevent it from flowing into the blower. The check valve is an added precautionary device.
By following these measures, the new blower may take a little longer to replace than the old.
